Great feature set and incredible range
Opinión original: The Netgear Nighthawk AX8 WiFi Router is packed with features and has the range to cover very large homes. This router is replacing an existing Linksys router (EA3500) and two Netgear access points (AC1200 – acting as an access point and the ProSafe WN203) in hopes of reducing the number of devices in our home network while increasing the reliability of our internet. Unpacking the device is what you would expect from a top line router as it was well packaged and easy to remove the contents from the box. The setup was a breeze as I disconnected the existing access points and replaced the existing router with this mean machine. The quick setup guide walks you through the simple setup process, along with installing optional software to make your experience even better. I installed the Netgear Genie application, which allows you to manage the majority of the features of the router. For a comprehensive list of advanced setup configuration options, you can log directly into the router itself using the provided credentials. Be sure to remember to change the administrative password, once you get started. The AX8 has all of the features you could hope for in a router. It comes with 2 wireless bands (2.4GHz and 5GHz), and the smart connect option allows the router to intelligently select the best WiFi band for each device that connects to it, ensuring you have the fastest connection at all times. The OFDMA increases your throughput capacity allowing data transmission from 8 separate devices concurrently. The router supports 160MHz channel to provide Gigabit speeds for mobile devices and laptops capable of supporting it. The AX8 is built for speed with a 64bit 1.8 GHz Quad-core processor and as with most routers of this caliber, the AX8 has a guest network option to allow guests an easy way to get connected without giving away your personal network credentials. The router comes with 6 Gigabit ethernet ports and 2 can be aggregated for faster LAN transfers and to enable Multi-Gig internet. It also possesses two USB ports to connect up external hard-drives and network printers. We hooked up a 4TB external hard-drive to one of the router USB ports and then enabled the ReadyCLOUD option which allows you to store and access the drive anywhere you have the internet. My dad immediately downloaded the readyCLOUD app on his iPhone and began to show us pictures he had saved to his hard drive directly from his phone. The AX8 comes with several security features as well. It allows you to grant/deny access by specific devices using their MAC addresses, block unsafe sites from being visited and block services. It also allows administrators to set a schedule for when the internet can be available, which is helpful if you want to limit the online time of children. Finally, it allows you to setup alerts and logs to be sent via email to stay informed about your network traffic. From the administration screen, administrators can manage attached devices, backup / restore router settings, update the router’s firmware, reset their admin password and more. The router is also capable of advanced setup like port forwarding, setting static routes, VPN service and remote management. Above all, the most impressive thing about this router is the speed and range. I did several speed tests at multiple locations throughout the large home this device was placed in and we saw as much as an 88% increase in speed in a few locations. With this router, the maximum download and upload speeds by our ISP were achieved in every room in the entire house! We were also able to successfully eliminate 2 additional access points in the house, minimizing the failure points if we should ever experience network challenges in the future. It is safe to say that this product far exceeded my expectations and the fact that it looks awesome is simply icing on the cake. I would definitely recommend this powerful router to anyone who needs coverage and speed across a large home or office. Although I received this product for free from the Netgear First Look Review Program, the content of my review contains my honest and unbiased opinion of this incredible product. The bottom line is…this thing rocks! Menos
Donkey1521 · Reseña escrita por Best Buy - 26 de diciembre de 2018Great for 4K Plex Content over WiFi
Opinión original: I personally love how this router handles traffic. It handles my 4K content over WiFi no problem to my living room with 0 stuttering. All my previous routers stuttered when it came to 4K content and we just gave up on it and went for BluRay content instead. There is one major issue for me in its current state. Plugged in directly to the ethernet port, as the only device, my Internet Speeds are instantly cut in half.... From Spectrum 1 gig internet getting about 700-900Mbits average directly connected to the Modem, these '1 gig' ports struggle to get anywhere near average of 300-400Mbits speeds. For some reason also, I consistently get micro stutter and notice on ping tests that my pings are going from 50-70 and spiking up to 350+. This happens 4-5 times in the span of a 10 second test and sometimes requires multiple restarts of the router. As someone who streams on a consistent basis and use it as a source of income, I find myself getting extremely frustrated with this router. Sure, I fixed my Plex issues and can watch 4K content locally over Wifi, but I should not be having any kind of direct connect issues with how much the price of this router is, and how new it is. This Modem came out in December 2018 and it has a great deal of room for improvement but as of right now its been 8 days since making a ticket with Netgear and I have yet to hear back from them about my issues. Also, AX is NEW technology and its a great concept, but the problem is the same as AD, its a technology that current technology has to adapt to and the pickings are very slim if you want to get the most out of your router. At its current state, if you are using this on a home network for sending content/file transfers/etc I would definitely recommend this router. If you want the best possible speeds and intend to directly connect, I honest would steer away. I get faster ethernet speeds on my older Nighthawk X6 which on average gets me around 600 Mbits download. Range is decent, but not as good as I hoped. I really wish I could give this a 4 or 5 stars because of how impressed I was with local connections, but as of right now I give it a solid 3/5 starts and advise waiting a few months for firmware updates to potentially fix some of the early issues. Andrew · Reseña escrita por Best Buy - 6 de enero de 2019Solid router and great performance
Opinión original: I am providing feedback based on 3+ months real world use of this product. Pros: 1) Awesome design 2) New Netgear GUI for setup and configuration - very easy to use and fast. I had the router setup in < 5 mins 3) Performance is decent out of the box - I expect with future firmware updates, this performance will improve more. Also performance will be better once you have matching AX clients connecting to the router 4) No wi-fi drops 5) Can handle 20 streaming clients without any issues 7) No buffering or stuttering when streaming wireless or wired 8) No dead spots in a 3500 sq feet home and coverage (3 bars) 30ft outside of house 9) Can create a single SSID which can handle both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz clients seamlessly 10) No issues connecting legacy AC wireless devices (Android and iOS) 11) No issue with VPN 12) Gigabit fiber speed test is 940mb/s up and down with a 2ms ping to testing server Cons: 1) Price 2) You will need AX clients to really take advantage of this product. AX should be taking off in 2019+ 3) You will hear the fan when you first power up the router. Also make sure you upgrade to .36 of the firmware after you setup the router to make sure fan does not stay running under normal use 4) Would have liked to see 8 gigabit ports for this price point 5) Would like to see parental controls, anti-virus add-ons in the future Overall, I am very happy with the performance of this router (even on the first beta firmware). If you have a router that is more than 4 yrs old or have a household with lots of wireless devices, this router is a good choice. The price is a bit expensive, but the router is well built. I expect performance to get better as firmware starts to mature. I have used the router every day for 2 months and it has worked flawlessly. Have not found any wi-fi dead spots in the house. Video streaming, web surfing, gaming all work without any issues. Menos
svan71 · Reseña escrita por Best Buy - 25 de octubre de 2019Great home coverage
Opinión original: I needed something that would give me better coverage than my old DIR-850L. 1500sq/ft ranch, router downstairs. I would barely get 20-25mbps in my master bedroom bath, with buffering and drops. This AX-8 gives me up to 125Mbps with the same Moto G6 phone, no buffering, no drops. I do not yet have any AX clients so I have that feature turned off, but my AC and N clients report full speeds anywhere in the house, and a few houses to either side. Not bad for a router in a basement with concrete walls all around. It has the address reservation and MAC filtering that I like, and QoS works. My Spectrum 200Mbps service overprovisions to about 210Mbps, but along with that comes a ton of bufferbloat. With QoS on that speed drops to about 185-195Mbps on the ethernet but no bufferbloat/packet loss so it is doing it's job. Was a bit pricey, but I needed a new router anyway and would have spent maybe $100 less for 3-5yo tech, this way I should be future proofed for the next 3-5 years. I seem to be getting streaming OK, my son reports no lag when playing fortnite or NHL19, and I just added a roku ultra box that holds connection easily so it is compatible and haven't noticed any lag on it either. So far so good, we'll see when I get more streaming devices because I plan on cutting the cord with Spectrum TV, just going to stream sling, hulu, etc. so since this router is rated to handle up to 6000Mbps I should have no problems streaming to multiple devices. Note: sometimes changing settings takes awhile, and I can't seem to keep my phones (all MOTO G6) recognized with the names that I assigned to them in the administration and security pages. They don't drop the connection, but they do revert to 'unknown' in device name and description. Minor PITA that I hope they fix as well as adding some more options in the GUI, I've had less expensive routers with more features but right now as long as I get this strong signal I can live with it. Hopefully they keep developing features for it and not just let it stagnate, it costs too much to just be satisfied with simple features. Menos
Amitrix · Reseña escrita por Best Buy - 15 de julio de 2019Nighthawk AX8
Opinión original: to anyone thinking of buying the netgear Nighthawk AX8, I have to say don't. I had purchased this as an upgrade from a netgear r6300, which served me well. from the specs I was expecting to have further coverage , the new AX technology to future proof, smart connect, an extra ethernet port among other features. What I now have is a Nighthawk AX8 that is consistently dropping devices, losing the 2.4ghz band and requiring a reboot, The smart connect which combines the 2.4 and 5ghz bands into a single same named network where it is supposed to automatically assign the device to the band which best serves it, seems to work but if connected to the 5ghz we have seen it drop you and then connect to the 2.4 and then back again, sitting stationary and less than 20 feet from the router I would expect this not to occur. A nice thing is that you can rename all your devices either in the App or from a browser, with a house filled with alexa and many smart devices, doorbells, lights, switches and outlets, I thought was nice anyway. It seems that even saving the names does not work since the next time you view your network from the app or browser the names have changed back to default. as far as support from netgear, almost non existent, opened a case, they routed me to the wrong support team and then said would call back or contact me, which they have not. Yes I even upgraded to the latest Firmware and it actually seems worse than before, since now the router seems to require a reboot to get back to working normal for a while. overall, I should have waited till netgear was actually ready to release this router and save the 300plus it cost Menos
pvl001 · Reseña escrita por Best Buy - 21 de junio de 2019Fast and easy
Opinión original: First I honestly don' t understand any of the bad reviews because this is the best router I have ever had. When you open it up it tells you to install the app. So all you have to do is plug everything in to the Nighthawk correctly the app then communicates with the router installs it and updates it within a few minutes and done. Plug and Play. The speeds are amazing. I had the verizon fios quantum with 1gbs speed but it would never reach that speed and when I would watch 4k videos even with direct ethernet connection it would lag especially when I was using google play to watch movies. I would get maybe 40 mbs speeds over wifi even though I am paying for 1gbs. However once I switched to this router I am now getting 900 mpbs through ethernet and 400mbs through wifi and with only about 5 ping. Right now this is the best it can do until more devices become compatible with wifi 6. If you want to future proof your router then this is the one to get and also if you want one of the fastest and best experiences with wifi you can get. It doesn't have as many features as some cheaper Wifi 5 routers(AC) because it is a new technology you will pay for that. SO if you want to have the fastest speed with the future in mind I would get this. If you are looking for a more feature rich router with adaptive QOS and more customization and aren't too worried about the newer wifi then I would get a wifi 5 router until wifi 6 become standard and the technology gets cheaper. If you have a ton of devices, are watching 4k videos, playing games online and have an older router or are noticing lag I would definitely recommend this router if you want to upgrade but if you don't care about future proofing then I would wait and just get a AC router for now Because you are paying a higher fee for early adoption. To sum up though I love it and am Loving my speed. Menos
TechFlash · Reseña escrita por Best Buy - 9 de mayo de 2019This Router is Awesome!
Opinión original: This router is awesome! Review done, that’s all you need to know. Ok, I will add a bit more, starting at the beginning: This was the simplest networking setup I have ever done. To add even more weight to that statement, I have done a lot of setups that were pretty easy and the ease of this setup simply blows them away. From start to finish the set up only took a few steps and I was guided the entire way by the Nighthawk App on my iPhone. If you want to set up a powerful home network and don’t want to have to spend a lot of time configuring then this would definitely fit that bill. Of course, easy installation is great but what does it matter how easy it is to install if the system doesn’t work well? Not to worry in this case as the system performs like a champ. In the past I had WiFi coverage problems in my home which required a strong WiFi device to get basic coverage throughout, and even then the coverage was generally intermittent. The AX8 not only covers the house it does so at full strength. No missing Wi-Fi bars on any of my devices anywhere in the house! Not only that, it is F.A.S.T! I have yet to see a slowdown on any device which, in my smart home, was rare because so many devices are competing for bandwidth. How does this new router do that?! The big reason for this is probably the addition of AX and OFDMA technology. Not to bore you with too many details but the simple way to put this is old routers used the entire frequency bandwidth to transmit data to one device and it had to wait for a channel to be clear before sending to a different device. If you have a lot of devices, even if they are only getting small amounts of data, that can add delays for the data waiting for the bandwidth. With AX, the router can deliver multiple packets of data simultaneously by splitting larger channels into smaller sub-channels. That way it can deliver data faster to more devices at all at the same time. The best comparison I heard was the old technology is like a delivery truck that can only carry one package at a time with one delivery per trip but AX is like a delivery truck that is full and can make many deliveries on a single trip. The net result: no traffic jams! I am a tinkerer and I like to “check in” on my network from time to time to see what’s up. With the Nighthawk app, once you do the basic setup you have some of the basic controls that most people might want to use right at their fingertips. There is no need to login through a browser and dig into the configuration pages to do things like enabling/disabling the guest WiFi network. Just a quick launch of the Nighthawk app, push a couple of buttons and you are good to go. You can also easily see what devices are connected, adjust parental controls, even shut off the network completely if, for example, you want to have an old-fashioned dinner as a family and see what everyone’s face looks like when not jammed into their screens! One feature I really like with the app is the capability when enabling the guest network to set a duration for how long it will run. That way you don’t have to remember to turn it off after your guests leave. Did I mention you can also use Alexa to control some settings, including the guest network? Yeah, you can do that too! Because I am fairly familiar with the setup and configuration of a home WiFi network I like having the ability to “look under the hood” and see how everything is configured. Generally, there are pages of settings with network gear and sometimes, if you understand what you are doing, it is worthwhile to make changes to fit your needs. This system also allows you to get in and have access to all of those deeper controls too using the browser pages for control. So it has the best of both worlds in that regards, simplicity for those that want it, full control for those that want more. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t give a shout out to the designers of this router. This thing looks awesome! I love the design with the wings that contain the antennas which give the whole device an amazing look. Nice job! There must also be a lot of power under the hood too because I can hear the slight sound of a fan when it is powered on. It is really quiet when it is running and I don’t know if I would have noticed it if I hadn’t heard it when I turned it on. If you are using this in an exceptionally quite space it may be more noticeable. In conclusion, if you want a great WiFi router that is incredibly simple to get up and running yet is very powerful this is a great system for meeting that need. At the same time, If you are a networking power user and also want to be able to configure Access Control Lists, QoS, enable a VPN, etc. this system also has that capability too. If that last sentence sounds like gibberish then this system is definitely the one you want to give you great performance and coverage in your home or small office but not require you to learn anything about networking to set up an excellent network. Although I was provided this product for free to test the system and write this review, the content of the review is my honest and unbiased opinion. Menos
FarSideOfCrazy · Reseña escrita por Best Buy - 24 de diciembre de 2018Not Enough for Gigabit Speeds
Opinión original: Towards the end of November I decided to upgrade my WiFi plan to the 1 Gigabit from Xfinity. Previously I had speeds of 15 Mbps and I had to upgrade my equipment. I ended up using Xfinity's own modem for a few days before I decided to buy my own modem. When I had to look for a router I came upon this Netgear Nighthawk AX600. I was drawn to this mainly for the new 802.11 ax technology. Before buying this I already knew I wouldn't be able to fully benefit from the technology unless I had devices that were compatible with the 802.11 ax technology. After I bought the router I installed it and perform updates before I started using it. Right away I was pretty disappointed at the WiFi speeds. My internet connection gives me around 930 on Ethernet and the speed drops to the 600s when using WiFi. I had this router for about 2 weeks and performed constant speed tests to get the speed at any given moment. The most common speed for me was 480 Mbps. At first I thought this was the max speeds over WiFi. Before I returned this router I decided to purchase the Asus RT-AC5300. On my first day of testing with the new router I noticed speeds reach high 500s and also reaching around 640 Mbps. The WiFi speeds were completely different with this router when compared to the Netgear one. I also decided to test this router against the Asus one on range. The Netgear router drops about 200 Mpbs when going from a second floor to a basement getting max speeds of 280 Mbps. It still covers most of the house but the drop is significant. I decided to compare the Asus router on the range and apart from providing fasted WiFi speeds, it also provided better range. In the basement I was getting speed of around 450 Mbps constantly. This was around the same download speeds that I was getting with the Netgear router when standing in the same room. The Netgear router is a lot more expansive and did not provide any improvements for a Gigabit connection. Apart from that, the Asus router has more features and it is easier to manage router from anywhere as long as you have an Internet connection. I'm sure people have valid reasons to buy this router but for me it didn't provide any improvements. Menos
CrisH · Reseña escrita por Best Buy - 17 de enero de 2019Simple to setup, super fast!
Opinión original: I got this router as a replacement for my old AC3200 (R8000). The first noticeable aspect of this router is the solid position antennas. The AC3200 had 6 movable antennas that never really improved the performance. The solid positioning on the AX6000 is a nice feature, not to mention, a totally better look. As far as setup, like many Netgear products, it was very straightforward. The Nighthawk app was actually really awesome to use as it walked you through the overall setup and configuration and also included a nice speed test feature. Compared to my older router, the AX6000 had a download speed bump of about 10 Mbps (from 90 to 100). The more noticeable improvement came on the range. I live in a really old home, with metal-lined sheetrock that causes some big issues with regards to range. This one reaches well beyond the walls of our home and makes connectivity consistent across our entire home. Having the multiple range networks along with Guest capabilities is a must-have for me in order to connect all of our devices. I've yet to have any issues with connecting all of my devices and use at the same time. One thing I did have to troubleshoot was connecting to an older laptop, that did not recognize any of the networks SSIDs. I ended up having to turn off the AX feature to get the device to see the networks, but it does not appear to have impacted any performance. Overall, this is a pretty expensive router, but if you want the best all-around performance, I think it is worth it. For that kind of money, you expect the best results and the AX6000 definitely delivers. Menos
cstubbs10 · Reseña escrita por Best Buy - 13 de diciembre de 2018Took awhile to figure out, best router ever owned!
Opinión original: I recently upgraded my internet to the Cox Gigablast and needed to upgrade my modem and router to handle the new speeds. I ended up going with the Netgear CM1200 for my modem and highly recommend it. In the last week I have tried over 3 different routers, all of them cost more than 250. They are all Netgear routers, XR500, AC4000, and finally the AX8. The XR500 and AC4000 had great wifi speeds but you had to be close to the router, even on 2.4ghz you had to be somewhat close. I have a 1700 sq ft home single story and still had range issues. I have about 6 wireless devices in my house and my Xbox One X is hardwired into the router. For some reason the XR500 and AC4000 couldn't get a strong enough wifi in my masterbedroom for my Amazon 4k fire stick. Once I went out in my backyard or garage the range was weak and my speeds dropped a lot, even on the 2.4ghz. I actually liked the XR500 more than the AC4000 due to the lower ping it gave me for my Xbox One X online. Other than that I needed something that had a lot better range than what I was getting. So I ended up returning the two since they weren't working for what I originally bought them to do. So I did some more research, figured I would try out the New Ax8 that came out a few months ago. Getting everything setup was a bit confusing at first, until I installed the app on my phone. It's actually nice to be able to set the router up using my phone vs a laptop. Right off the bat this router is flying on my speed test and the range was good. However I started to noticed my range was slightly better than the 250 dollar routers, but not by much. I searched around online and found a few people having the same issue as I was. Did some more research on Netgear forums and finally found the solution to my problem. You have to go into the router on a laptop to change the channels. The app has a option 'wifi statics' so you can test and see the different devices on your wifi connection. It also shows you the frequency so you can adjust to different channels and it even tells you what channels have the less amount of traffic. I ended up turning the 'auto' feature on my 2.4ghz off and picked channel '11' since it seem to empty. I checked the frequency on the app with that channel and sure enough it was great. Ran a speed test while connected to the 2.4ghz and it finally worked!! I am getting great speeds in any room through out my house. So I repeated these steps with my 5ghz and that also improved big time. Anyone having range issues or low speeds needs to use the app on your phone and the wifi statics to figure out your channel issue. Be sure to check out the forums online for Netgear, there is a lot of useful information on there. Menos
