Innovation with useful features and amazing sound

Opinión original: As we all know, the market is oversaturated with wireless Bluetooth speakers in all shapes and sizes. Kudos to Sony for stepping up to create something innovative with features that incorporate what many people, including myself, might find useful. While using most Bluetooth speakers, I noticed I would typically take them with me when I was heading to the park, a friend/family member's house for a barbecue, or on a road trip. The one thing I found that most portable speakers lacked is deep bass or loud enough sound. I definitely no longer need to worry about that with the Sony PG10 Portable Bluetooth Outdoor Speaker as they designed and optimized it for outdoor use. After unpacking it and upon first look, the speaker, which is a title that doesn't do it justice, might be a little intimidating due to its aggressive box shaped look. However, don't be fooled by its size or Transformer-like top shelf. It was surprisingly light considering its size and easy enough to carry around with the side handles. It has most of the basic features you would find on any Bluetooth speaker including wireless connection, on/off, volume up/down, etc. It also includes a built in FM tuner with a retractable antenna, audio input, microphone input, microphone volume up/down, and a USB port for music or powering/charging a device. The functions are shown on a scrolling display. It has a button for mega bass which I'll definitely be leaving on most of the time. If you fold out the top shelves, the tweeters fire upwards producing much wider sound which comes in handy outdoors. It claims to have a 13 hour charge time and I'm sure that fluctuates depending on how loud you have the speaker set and whether you are using the USB port to power or charge a device. That being said, I'm sure it's good at a party for several hours unplugged. It also has an option to attach it to a tripod to use as a monitor speaker for events or karaoke. The speaker is splash proof if you plan on using the built in cup holders or top shelf. It was very easy to pair the speaker with my smartphone via the Bluetooth and by downloading the Sony apps you can control the speaker and stream music using other streaming services. Even given all the innovative features they put into this box, the incredible sound is what stood out the most. The Digital Sound Processor (DSP) automatically adapts audio settings to optimize performance for both indoor and outdoor environments. The music is crystal clear and loud in both the compact and expanded shelf options. I attempted to turn it all the way up indoors, which was way too loud, and the music remained clear without distortion. Given all these features, I would recommend the Sony PG10 Outdoor Speaker to anyone in the market for a well made, great sounding speaker. Menos

Great speaker with lots of functionality

Opinión original: This Sony Bluetooth speaker has the best bang for your buck I have seen in a portable Bluetooth speaker.... and it has cupholders! In the box: - GTK-PG10 Speaker - Power/Charging Cable - Manuals Setup is very simple like all other Bluetooth speakers. If you want you can connect it to Sony's Music Center app which give you a little extra control of sound settings and settings in general. Design: The design of this speaker is very unique mainly due to the integrated grab handles which turn into cup holders and a shelf on top. The front features two large ports for the just over 7' speaker and the two tweeters reside in the folding section on top. The buttons are large, easy to use and have a rubber texture. The USB, RCA, and Mic inputs are located behind a plastic cover towards the top. Sony's says the top of this unit is splash proof in case drinks happen to spill on top and I have to say I agree although I would try not to do it all the time. Features: - USB, RCA, Microphone, and Bluetooth inputs - FM Tuner - Tripod Compatible - Cupholders - 5+ Hours at max volume (LOUD!), Up to 13 hours at 50% volume. - Relatively easy to carry/portable Sound quality: The sound quality combined with the features of the PG10 is where the huge value proposition comes into play. The volume range of the PG10 is very large so it has the ease of playing indoors and outdoors. The actual sound quality is good not amazing but for its intended use its more than clear. The Mega Bass function actually provides a decent difference and is a must for playing outdoors to get the most range out of the music. My only complaint about the speaker is when the top is unfolded the unit recognizes this and changes the 'fade' between the large speaker and tweeters so it becomes almost a little unbalanced and too 'tinny' sounding. I know this is to get the most sound out of the unit and is perfect for outdoor use but if you wanted to use the cup holders without this change in sound it cannot be done. I just wish it was a mode rather than controlled based on when the top is open/closed. Summary: For $250 the PG10 has TONS to offer! I have had experience with speaker that where smaller and cost the same as this one and did not provide nearly the same sound quality and functionality. I would definitely recommend this speaker to anyone who needs a speaker to take around to small/medium size events that runs on battery and provides a great sound. Menos

Your outdoor Party Speaker

Opinión original: From the moment I picked this box I notice how really light the box was to include the packaging. The speaker was very well packed, and I notice how well protected it was but then again that is expected from Sony. Upon powering up the speaker, I held the Demo button to see what it was capable of. I was pretty impressed with the sound but, a little let down on the low frequency (Bass). Upon opening the top portion to reveal 4 cup holders and a splash proof pad. When I opened up the top, the sound paused, and then continued playing, it seems that’s when the signal processor kicked in, you can notice the sound difference from the external tweeters they get a bit louder. The sound was actually crystal clear when in party mode (top open). When the upper portion is closed the sound actually becomes more like direct firing focusing on one direction, while open the tweeters up fire creating a more surround like sound. If you have a clumsy friend the top is also rated splash proof which is great but I really don’t want to test it to find out. The battery on the speaker claim to last about 13 hours if used at vol level 25 which is halfway, I used it at the beach at full blast it gave me a little over 6 hours. I am pretty sure that is one of the aux connections is used you may get more juice out the battery since you don’t have to use the BT connection, but I didn’t test that. It’s really pleasing to know that you have that much battery power available. Some additional features also include a microphone plug in to do sing along or karaoke with your phone as a guide. I don’t have a microphone to test this out but I do plan to get one because who doesn’t love Karaoke! The speaker also features a key changer for those who may need that to adjust their voice tone while singing. I have only used the speaker with Bluetooth but I really appreciate the option of an auxiliary input and RCA inputs for other devices that may not have Bluetooth. There is a USB connection which you can use to play music files direct from USB source, including your phone, it can also be used for charging as well. There is an FM Tuner built in which I don’t use that often but I can think of finding use for it during a power outage due to an emergency such as a natural disaster like hurricanes since I live in Florida. The LCD screen location on the upper portion of the speaker will display the volume level, battery level, connect devices, and inputs it will not display current track playing ?. You also get audible notifications of the battery level. The speaker is about 14Lbs but when carry around using the side handles the weight is evenly managed you don’t feel it. By the way this speaker can be also mounted on a tripod. Overall this a great speaker with great sound for outdoor parties, gatherings, picnics or just hanging out at the beach, and the best part without breaking the bank, now days a lot of BT speakers will fall within the same price range and without many of the features this one has. Pros: Battery Life Sound Quality Portability Lightweight Sources inputs Cons: Bass Menos

Great Party Boom Box with Nice Bass!

Opinión original: I'm usually skeptical of portable devices that promise great bass but I was not disappointed with the Sony PG10. As far as Bluetooth speakers go, this is one of the best with some nice extra features that indoor and outdoor party-folk might really enjoy. The unit is fairly portable, although you will need two hands to carry it. It is lighter than you would imagine, considering the 13-hour battery and size of the woofer. It has two modes for indoor and outdoor and each is triggered by the position that the tweeters are in - folded out for outdoor and left folded in for indoor. To really enjoy this system, you should download the Sony Music Center app. It will guide you through connecting the Bluetooth as well as centrally manage your library and external players such as Pandora and Spotify which makes changing tunes a little more seamless for the host. There is a second app that works with it too called Fiestable but I did not try that. It supposedly allows more remote control of the front features as well as voice control which could be useful for the busy party host/DJ. I found the unit very easy and intuitive to use and it did not require too many instructions to explore the features. There are several preset equalizer settings that are accessible through the Sony Music Center app as well as the ability to customize them yourself although I found this harder as the sound cuts out for a split-second each time you make a change. That said, for party/dance/most other types of music, I found the default setting to be more than satisfactory. This would be a good tailgating accessory. It is more than loud enough and has a built in FM radio as well as the streaming capability. I played around with tuning the radio and most local stations sounded great. You can save them as presets as well which is useful. I'm not sure if the included cup holders are as useful as promised but the unit does claim to have a spill-proof top in case someone's red solo cup gets knocked over on top there. Still, I would prefer no liquids near any of my sound equipment. The indoor mode sound was very good although I was hoping for slightly better mid range. The bass cannot be faulted though and for entertaining, it is more than adequate and fills any room. To test the outdoor mode, I took the speaker out to a 6-acre spot of land as it would definitely not go down well in my part of suburbia at full blast! The wider sound dispersion from the outdoor mode worked very well and I could hear all the tracks very clearly and loudly from quite some distance away. I probably walked about 150 yards or more away and could still hear everything very clearly, from all angles and not just in front of it. No quality seemed to be lost despite the unit's relatively modest size and the folded out tweeters seemed to fire up and out in that position which helps spread the sound in a wide arc of dispersal. I cranked the volume up to its maximum on the unit and then you can still control volume further on your streaming app. Stood right next to it was a little uncomfortable but a few steps away it was comfortably loud and the sound did not distort at all. Sony also added a hole for a standard speaker pole so you could put it up higher for even better sound dispersion. The unit also has the ability to plug in a microphone so the host could make announcements on it as well as have party goers join in with karaoke to any songs - the unit has buttons to alter the pitch up or down in case anyone is really struggling which could be a lifesaver on occasion! Battery life seems to be very good. I have run it for about 5-6 hours so far and still around 50% of battery life reported. Charging it up is as easy as plugging it in with a standard power cable but you don't need that when you head outside although it will keep charged up if you have a power source to hand. Things that would run the battery down faster include charging a phone (with the included USB port), running the Extra Bass mode (but really, why wouldn't you do that?) and having the volume cranked up but these are just things to bear in mind and should not affect anything but the longest of all day/night parties. I am very impressed with this unit. It is great to have on hand for outdoor parties. It would make a very powerful indoor, Bluetooth speaker that puts most other portable units to shame with its superb bass. When I am not using it for outdoor events, it will be my garage/workshop unit and I look forward to that thumping bass when I next head out for some garage chores. Menos

Great speaker for outdoor activities

Opinión original: I have used the Sony PG10 on a week long camping trip where I have had the chance to really put this speaker through its paces. During most of the week I kept the speaker plugged into electric, but for 1 full day I used the PG10 on battery power and charged up my S9+ while streaming blue-tooth and never ran out of power. The Sony PG10 also has some nice features you don't find in many blue-tooth speakers on the market. The speaker has 'wings' that fold out providing cup holders for those outdoor get-togethers. The 2 tweeters are located in these fold out trays and when in their out position, the sound profile is changed to be more spacious. With the trays folded in, the tweeters sit directly above the single woofer creating a more centered sound stage. One thing I noticed is at low volume, which we had to keep in the campground, I prefer the sound with the trays folded in. To my ears, at low volume with the tweeters folded out, the highs overshadowed the woofer. Once the volume was increased, the speaker really shined with the tweeters expanded. The app that sony uses to control this speaker adds a lot more adjustability to the speaker and you can add whatever streaming service you enjoy and select that service to blue-tooth to the speaker. There are also different preset sound fields that can be selected through the app. The PG10 also has a built in FM tuner to pick up your favorite local stations. I really enjoy the sound from this larger speaker, compared to the various small blue-tooth speakers I have, and for larger areas, there really isn't any comparison on sound output and quality. If you are looking for a very nice speaker to fill larger spaces with high quality audio, the PG10 is really worth looking at. I would recommend this speaker. Menos

'Portable' and 'outdoor' are stretches

Opinión original: On removing this unit from the box you immediately get the impression the Sony PG10 is a well-made and sturdy speaker. After playing with it for a few hours, you realize your first impression was correct. The speaker box itself is made of MDF and not plastic like most are these days. To me, using wood improves the sound quality and resonating abilities of the cabinet. The multitude of inputs is a nice addition (note, there is no 3.5 mm input), and the rechargeable battery comes in handy when using this speaker away from a ready source of power. I have used the USB to charge my phone while playing music over Bluetooth which was an added bonus. (I have no desire to use the PA/karaoke features so those are non-starters with me personally, as is the tripod mount.) You will definitely want to download the Music Center app to unlock the full potential of this machine as many of the settings and adjustments aren't available using the hard controls on the front of the unit. I already had the app for other Sony speakers I own, and adding the PG10 was a snap. The first thing I did after setting it up in the app was get rid of the EQ preset Sony ships the PG10 with. I found the sound quality was less than stellar using the stock settings, but after a quick tweak using the app, the sound quality came up to what I expect from Sony. Volume levels are impressive and there is only very mild distortion at maximum volumes. Battery life will obviously suffer if you push it that hard, but at reasonable levels you could easily use the PG10 for an extended party. Now for a couple of gripes that keep me from giving the PG10 a full 5 stars. When you first power up the unit, the demo mode is on by default and there is no clear indication of how to shut it off. I found that extremely irritating and spent several minutes looking through the spartan users manual to figure out how to shut it off. (I'll save you some time, press and hold the 'mic echo' button for 3 seconds or more.) Although marketed as an 'outdoor' and 'portable' speaker, I'm not sure I totally agree with either of those statements. MDF, being a pressed wood product, likely won't take too well to moisture. While the sound stage and throw is certainly strong enough to use outside, I'd be fearful of getting it too close to the pool, hot tub, or clumsy children or friends. The shallow handles and relatively heavy cabinet (14+ lbs.) require two hands to move this thing around, which to me isn't ideal for a party on-the-go.The fold-out 'wings' which spread the sound and make the top into a table is a neat feature. I did notice the cupholders aren't sufficiently large to hold larger based beverage containers and higher-end stainless steel can coozies. Finally, and this is probably my biggest beef with this speaker, Sony chose not to include Party Chain functionality in the PG10. Really?!? I have several other Sony speakers that I use this function with and love it. Why Sony left it out of this unit is a complete mystery. Menos

Great Outdoor Portable Speaker

Opinión original: This is a great portable Bluetooth speaker for outdoor use in a backyard, tailgating, camping or any other outdoor setting. It has a top that opens up to provide a flat, splash-resistant top with a couple of cup holders. This makes it ideal for something like tailgating or camping where table space may be limited, as you can then set things on top of it. When open, this also angles the tweeters upward, making the sound carry even further. The mega bass feature gives it much better bass than most portable speakers. This speaker is larger than most portable speakers, as it is approximately 13 x 15 x 12 inches and around 14 pounds. However, the size is what gives it a much better bass and all-around sound for outdoor environments. I found the speaker sounded good in my house also. With the top closed, the tweeters fire down and the sound was good at all different volume levels. However, I found it really shines when played outdoors. I connected via Bluetooth to my iPhone and walked to the back of my yard, which is around 60 feet. The sound was good, loud and clear, with a good bass punch. Also, the Bluetooth connection was still solid at that distance, as I had the phone in my hand. It paired up very easily with my iPhone. The rechargeable battery is supposed to last for up to 13 hours, which is quite long for a speaker of this size. I played it for 6 hours straight and still had around half the battery left, so that sounds about right. In addition to Bluetooth, it has a L & R audio input and a USB port to connect other devices or charge a phone. Another real nice feature that you don't get on many portable speakers is an FM tuner. I was able to connect to FM in my house and pulled in more channels than I can on my home component stereo. The speaker also has the ability to connect a microphone and it can be placed on a tripod. There is also a Sony Music Center App that allows you to control a number of things on this speaker, such as equalizer settings, the music on your device, connection to other streaming services, a sleep timer, setting up FM presets, etc. Another app called Fiestable has additional features, such as a karaoke feature you can use with the speaker. From a design perspective, I really liked the overall design. With the top closed, it gives you a nice indented area to place things you don't want to lose track of. Using it with the top open and having the ability to use cup holders and not worry about spilling on it is great for many outdoor activities. My only suggested design improvements would be first, to maybe have a tray or something that would pull out to shield the control buttons. With cup holders on top or in certain party situations, I could see a full drink getting spilled on it. While this wouldn't hurt the top of the speaker, it could drip over the edge onto the control buttons. Second, it would be nice if it had a handle of some sort that would allow for carrying it with one hand. It has a handle under the closed lid on both sides, but not the type that would allow you to carry it with one hand. You have to use both hands, although the square design would allow you to stack and carry it on top of something or carry things on top of it. Overall, I am very happy with this speaker's sound and design and it will be a great addition to various outdoor events, while also proving useful indoors, in rooms without a stereo. Menos

Not your ordinary bluetooth speaker

Opinión original: My initial impression of this speaker was a bit underwhelming for the size of the speaker. Dramatically larger than your run-of-the-mill portable pill-shaped speaker, I was expecting something with some serious kick to it. Unfortunately, this speaker isn't going to be rattling any windows, even with 'Mega Bass' turned on. That said, it's still not a bad bluetooth speaker. Indoors it can fill a room with sound, and probably better than most other portable speakers, wings open or closed. Since this speaker is obviously designed for outdoor use, I took it out to see how it performed. I was pleasantly surprised how well it did in a big open area with wind blowing. I cranked the volume to max, turned on mega bass, and also cranked the volume to max on my phone (Galaxy S9+). The sound never sounded distorted or strained, and it sounded clear from all angles. Battery dropped about 10-15% under this maximum load over about 20 minutes... meaning if you plan on cranking it to max you may only get just over 3 hours of listening. At more reasonable volumes, you can probably get much longer battery life. Although you the Sony Music Center app isn't required for this speaker, it grants you extra settings and control over the speaker. After I paired to the speaker with bluetooth, it wanted to pair again through the app, and it didn't work until I 'forgot' the speaker in my phone bluetooth settings. Besides this odd hiccup, setup was fine. The app works well enough, you can power off the speaker, change the volume, check the battery level, and turn the voice guidance on and off (though turning off the voice for the battery level didn't seem to work). You can also adjust the equalizer settings, which despite being 5 taps to get to in the app, work well as well. It seems the speaker by default is set for 'Excited' which I did not like at all, so I strongly encourage playing with the EQ settings and find the one you like. You can also set a custom EQ. I found I liked 'Energetic' and 'Relaxed' the best. Overall, if you're looking for a capable speaker than can be used at BBQs, Camping, or Tailgates, and also hold your drinks, this may be what you're looking for. Menos

Loud, functional party box.

Opinión original: I don’t normally open a review on a negative note, but I really feel Sony missed one major thing with this outdoor wireless speaker that they even advertise as “Easy to carry.” No one wants to carry this 14lb speaker with two hands. If you are bringing it to a party, you are going to want to carry your favorite beverage in one hand and this party machine in the other. Even a simple fabric strap would have made all the difference. The carry handles are shallow and flat, so it is even difficult to try and hold it on your hip with one hand. Ok, rant out of the way. This Sony GTK-PG10 speaker is a nice party in a box though. You can connect to it through Bluetooth, USB, or stereo audio cable (not included). It has a FM tuner built in so you can listen to local stations or the broadcast at your favorite sporting event. It also has a microphone input and some simple microphone settings so you can use it as an announcement system of karaoke machine. It can even be set on a tripod pole like other event sound systems. Sound from this system can be heard clearly from a fair distance. I know my neighbors were wondering what was going on while I was first testing it out on my nearly acre lot. Flipping the top open makes a noticeable difference as well. With it closed the tweeters are strictly high sounds. However, when flipped open it is like some mid range sounds are pushed through them to help project the audio. As with most of Sony’s speakers, it has the usual Mega Bass option that even with it off this system delivers decent bass. However, since it is the only speaker for everything other than the highs, it can flutter a bit at high volumes in mixed range songs. The front panel on this speaker can be a bit overwhelming, with 13 buttons. Then, if you actually read the manual, you will find there are even more settings that require combinations of pushing buttons. Like being able to truly disable the demo mode, enabling child lock so kids don’t have fun with the buttons and checking the battery level. Some of this can be handled through their Sony Music Center app as well as some additional settings. They claim up to 13 hours on battery life, but there are so many variables to this that you are unlikely to get that time unless you are just using it to listen casually in a small room at low volumes. However, at “party” levels you are still going to get several hours of use and you always have the option to plug it into a 110v outlet. The USB port on this can also provide your mobile devices with a charge, so long as you aren’t using USB as a function to play music. So, if you want to keep your phone running while nowhere near an outlet, you have a life line. Another thing I find odd that they didn’t include is the party chain option. With two or more of these speakers linked you could truly have the big event feel wirelessly, but hope you have a device that can stream to two Bluetooth devices to do it. The audio cable input for this is also standard red/white RCA instead of 3.5mm aux, so depending on what you are intending to connect, you will need to consider the cable. As the weather starts warming up, this speaker will definitely get more use. With it’s splash-proof top it can sit on a table without taking up useful space. With it’s simple design it doesn’t look like I’m trying to throw a rave, but just having some music for a party. Menos

Great for indoor/outdoor and karaoke

Opinión original: In the box is the Sony speaker and cord and instruction manual. Pull the system out and plug it in. No assembly necessary. Beware, this speaker is a little heavy, not a deal breaker but it looks light but if you are thinking of carrying to the beach or somewhere far, beware of the weight. It will get heavy with time. The sound is great. I played indoors and outdoors and I enjoyed in both areas. It will definitely fill the room and the area with sound/music. Bluetooth connectivity was easy and it works better when you download the Sony app. It works even better when you download the Sony app and the Fiestable app so that you can enjoy the karaoke side of the speaker. It does sound like a lot of work, but the apps together with the speaker work excellent. There is a metal antenna to assist with local AM/FM channels which I thought was nice, don't see that much anymore. I actually tested it and got majority of the local channels that I listen to every now and then. Also, it would be beneficial to keep the manual handy because there are a few other different combinations of buttons that you can use with the speaker as well. One of the key things to remember is do not sit on the speaker. There is a do not sit on the speaker sticker on the top of the speaker but it is small and you may not notice at first. Also, when the top is flipped up, there is an area (handles) to carry the speaker. When the top is flipped down, there are four cup holder gussets. Another thing to recognize is the plastic removable panel for external cords to plug in external devices. There is a key button to change the key/range/pitch of the song playing which is great for karaoke. All in all, I think that this is a great speaker for someone that has a lot of outdoor gatherings or get togethers that wants something that has great sound for a decent sized area/room. I know for sure that this speaker will be put to good use for slumber parties and family get togethers and maybe even Sunday dinners when the family wants to listen to music or have karaoke night or just want to have fun.
